The lake-villages and the birds sanctuary of the Tonle Sap (the big lake)

The Tonlé Sap and the Mékong were always an essential way of commerce and still now a large part of all the goods circulating in Cambodia are transported on the lake.
Nowadays, thanks to the fertility of the neighbouring lands and owing to the productive fisheries of the Tonle Sap, an important population is living close and on the lake, spread in about 60 villages.
These lake-villages are very different and clustering from 80 to 6000 inhabitants.
The families are living on small boats or in floating houses, built with bamboos and located on the rivers or in the floated forest during the rainy season and on the banks during the dry season. The « altitude » of these floating houses can therefore differ of 7 or 8 meters from one season to another.

The lake also includes the famous birds sanctuary of Prek Toal located at about two hours from Siemreap. Thousands of birds are coming each year at the dry season to nest in a very large floated forest. This sanctuary is one of the most important one in south Asia protecting many endangered species. Armies of aigrettes and cormorants dive or harpoon at the surface the huge creel of fishes. Clouds of herons and five species of kingfishers may be seen following the meanderings of the forest.
