Safety
In the past, tourists have been victims of crime because of
the political climate. But at the present time, the security
of tourists is under control. My country does not have a
higher delinquency rate than in other towns in the world.
In Phnom Penh, tourists are often targeted because they
carry money and cameras. Especially late at night, it is not
wise to go out walking without to be escorted. So avoid
wearing valuable or flashing jewellery of any kind and
should meet bad guys, the best is not to panic and not to
resist.
I also recommend to keep with you the address of your hotel
or of your destination written in Khmer to show it to the
taxi or “tuk-tuk” driver.
Bargaining
As in the other Asian countries, in Cambodia, bargaining is
the rule in the shops and in the markets, except in
international class stores and small supermarkets.
The vendors always repeat « give me more, I lose money, How
much you pay ? I give a special price for you » (which
normally means a multiple of the normal price !)
In the tourist sites, don’t hesitate to try to obtain at
least a 50 % discount (see « Practical glossary »).
In non-tourist places and in the countryside, the announced
price is closer to the reality.
But please in any case, please bargain for needs, not greed
and make sure that you really want the item before you start
bargaining for it.
