The secret garden of Ratanakiri

Regarding the Kreung tribes, they have preserved a very interesting custom : when a young girl is in age to get married, her father build for her a small house close to the family house and she is free to invite the one(s) she likes evenings and nights.

The young single warriors must on their side prove their skills building a very high house (10 meters piles) and prove their courage by living in it.

I will have a great pleasure to give you more detail on the spot about these singular customs.

Nous aurons grand plaisir à vous détailler sur place cette coutume si particulière.

My comments

To reach Ratanakiri by road or by boat along the Mékong is feasible but difficult. Therefore, the plane from Phnom Penh to Banlung (more or less a one hour flight) is the best.

The roads and tracks in Ratanakiri are built in laterite (red earth) and are more than less broken up ; a jeep is almost a must.

Obviously the rainy season is to be avoided and trekking requiring up to 4 to 5 walking hours requests a good health and good shoes. (see our chapter –medical precautions).

Of course, our personal comfort will have to be a bit sacrificed but it is absolutely sure that you will enjoy an unforgettable adventure by jeep, dugout and by walking as well as (for enthusiast adventurers and adventuresses) a unique and enriching experience sharing the genuine way of life of the inhabitants of a Khmer Leu village.

The ethnic minorities that we will meet, are not yet very accustomed to tourists and we will therefore behave respectfully (see our chapter « Recommandations » – Customs). Of course, at this occasion, I will accompanied by a ranger and translator of the languages of these ethnic minorities.
