The Khmer language and writing

Ecriture Pâli The Khmer Language

It belongs to the group of Australasian languages which are supposed to have given birth to Thai, Lao and Burma languages. Some Indo-European influences are also found in the Khmer language. Like in many other far East languages, the words are invariable and there are no precise mark indicated the number, the gender, the mood nor the tense… and therefore no conjugation to learn. In Khmer language, there are words which play the role of our verbs, adjectives, substantives but they cannot be differentiated. Their role only depends of their place in the sentence.

On the other side, any Cambodian word is to be considered in its broadest sense. Therefore, it is indispensable to precise its mean with following determiners and in an adequate increasing determination.
It could be a words sequence in a sentence if necessary to gradually precise the meaning.

Syntax :

- The words are invariable. There is no conjugation, no gender, no article.

- To indicate plural, a determiner will be added : « Bread three pieces »

- To indicate the gender, you will have to precise male/female : « ape female»

- For the tense, adverbs will be added (yesterday, tomorrow,…) but the verbs remain in the infinitive.
